Below is a sample of a family biography included in the Laclede County, Missouri History published in 1889 by Goodspeed Publishing Company.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details in a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

Daniel Beckner, a prominent farmer of Spring Hollow Township, was born in the "Old Dominion,'' Montgomery Co., Va., August 9, 1821, and is a son of Daniel and Mary Beckner, who were of German descent, and natives of the "Keystone State." The paternal grandfather came from the Fatherland to America some time prior to the Revolutionary War, locating on a farm in Pennsylvania, where he reared a family of five children, of whom Daniel was the youngest son; he was born about 1792. He removed to Virginia when a young man, and in 1827, with his family, which consisted of his wife and nine children, immigrated to Preble County, Ohio, where they resided until 1834 or 1835, when they removed to Elkhart County, Ind. In 1839 they removed to Dallas County, Mo., where the town of Long Lane is now located. There the father died in 1869, having been a member of the county court, and first assessor of the county. His wife was born in 1798, and died in Indiana in 1863. They were both members of the German Baptist Church, and their family consisted of eleven children, all of whom lived to be grown, and seven are living at the present time: Levi, Mary Ann, Daniel, Aaron, Naomi, Delilah and Eli. Those deceased are Isaac, Samuel, James and Catherine. Daniel was in his eighteenth year when he came to Missouri with his father, and he continued to reside on the home place until thirty-seven years of age, but during the war made his home in Indiana. Since that time he has resided on his present farm, having been married to Nancy F. Moore, a native of Kentucky, who came to Missouri when a girl. To them were born two children, Siege1 and Jesse, the latter being deceased. The mother was a member of the Missionary Baptist Church, and died in 1863, after which Mr. Beckner married Ellen Schoolfield, a native of Tennessee, by whom he became the father of the following children: Chloe, E. C., Dan, and Levi (deceased). Ha is a Republican in politics, and served one term as a member of the State Legislature. He is deeply interested in church and school work, and especially in the education and well-being of the rising generations, who are wanted to surpass, if possible, the past.
