Below is a sample of a family biography included in the Marion County, Missouri History published in 1884 by E. F. Perkins.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details in a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

JOHN W. SCOTT. Mr. Scott is a native of Kentucky, and was born in Henry county, September 9, 1825. He is the son of Smith and Mary (Chilton) Scott; his father a native of Kentucky, his mother of Virginia. Mr. Scott's father died when he was eight years old. He was raised by his mother, and educated in the public schools of Pike and Marion counties, Mo. He was married in May, 1846, to Miss Sarah J. McPike, daughter of James and Zerelda (Sudduth) McPike. To this union were born three children, of whom one, Mary Zerelda, is dead. The others are James S. and Susan M. Mrs. Scott died in the fall of 1854. September 25, 1855, Mr. Scott was married to Miss Sarah E. Godman, daughter of G. M. and Evaline (Sudduth) Godman, of Kentucky. She, however, is a native of Marion county, Missouri, and was born October 15, 1834, They have had six children, of whom two, George M. and Lennie W., are deceased. Those living are: Francis M., Charles B., Edward M., and Mary E. Mr. Scott lived for a time on the place of his father-in-law, Mr. McPike, but moved to his present home in 1848. His farm is valued at $9,000, and consists of 390 acres of very fine land, on which is an orchard and other improvements. Mr. Scott has been a prominent member of the Baptist church since 1851. Has been for several years deacon in the same. He is one of a family of four sons, all of whom are living. His father, Smith Scott, was born January 4, 1804, and died October 20, 1833. His mother was born November 15, 1804, and died March 11, 1873. Mr. Scott has a fine large house, and other good farm buildings, and the improvements on his place are creditable to his excellent management and industry..
